Microsoft’s killer app is raking in sales by the truckload, drawing in over 1.5 million pre-orders alone and topping out at an estimated 2.38 million total by Tuesday’s end. This opening would make it one of the biggest in gaming history, though most believe Rockstar’s San Andreas still outsold Bungie’s high-profile first person shooter in its first day of release. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates was quick to compare Halo 2 to blockbuster Hollywood motion picture releases, but considering the price of movie tickets verse the price of a new game, the gloating seemed a bit unwarranted. Still, a launch this large is still an excellent sign of the maturity of the industry.
